Thyroid Health Facts and Stats 2012

January is Thyroid Health Awareness Month. This blog post shares "Facts and Stats" on the disorder that is more common than diabetes or heart disease, and often goes undiagnosed because of its subtle symptoms.

THYROID HEALTH DISORDER TYPES:

There are two main types of thyroid disorders:
  • Hypothyroidism is the underproduction of the thyroid hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine). This makes their metabolism slow down. About 80 per cent of patients with thyroid disorders suffer from hypothyroidism.
  • Hyperthyroidism is the underproduction of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. It is less common. A hyperactive thyroid over-produces hormones and works more than it needs to, speeding up your metabolism.

THYROID DISEASE PREVENTION:

There is no known way to prevent hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. A healthy diet, exercise and proper nutrition are not just the keys to living a healthy life, but also key preventive measures. Reduce stress. If you are a smoker, stop smoking, as smoking can damage the thyroid. Some doctors advise avoiding soy supplements and eating no more than one small serving of soy foods daily.

WHY YOUR THYROID IS ESSENTIAL TO OVERALL GOOD HEALTH:

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. Despite being relatively small, the thyroid gland plays a major role in influencing several functions of the body's most important organs, including the heart, liver and kidneys. Therefore, ensuring the proper functioning of the thyroid is essential to the body's overall health.

Hypothyroidism is more common than hyperthyroidism. Roughly 80 per cent of total thyroid cases are categorised as hypothyroidism.

HYPOTHYROIDISM SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
  • depression
  • moodiness
  • muscular weakness and constant fatigue
  • muscle aches and pains
  • a weak, slow heart beat
  • unexplained weight gain
  • sensitivity to cold
  • thick, puffy skin
  • forgetfulness
  • constipation
  • hoarse voice
  • dry skin and hair
  • heavy menstrual flow

EARLY DETECTION:

One way to increase early detection of thyroid nodules is to perform a Thyroid Neck Check, a simple check you can do anytime, developed by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).

HOW TO CHECK YOUR NECK AND THYROID GLAND

What you need:
  1. Glass of water
  2. Hand-held mirror
Hold the mirror in your hand, focusing on the lower front area of your neck, above the collar bone, and below the voice box. This is the area in which the thyroid gland is located.

While looking at this area in the mirror, tip your head back.

Take a drink of water and swallow.

As you swallow, look at your neck. Check for bulges or protrusions in the area while swallowing. Don't confuse the Adam's apple with the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located further down the neck, closer to the collar bone. Repeat the process as many times as you might need to.

If you do see any bulges or protrusions in this area, consult a doctor. You may have an enlarged thyroid gland or a thyroid nodule and should be checked to determine whether treatment for thyroid disease is needed.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Thyroid disease is more common than diabetes or heart disease
  • More women suffer from thyroid disorders than men
  • The chances of developing a thyroid problem increase with age
  • Thyroid disorders tend to be genetic
  • Irritability and changes in weight gain are other signs of a thyroid disorder.

Since the signs and  symptoms of thyroid disorder are common and can be associated with other medical conditions, thyroid disorders often go undiagnosed.

You Can Make a Difference Today!

Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund is a 100% Volunteer led thyroid cancer awareness, access to care and free supportive services project of United Charitable Programs Inc., a 501(c) 3 Public Charity. It was originally started in 2008  by a group of friends who have all lost someone close to them with this disease we call cancer or who have been touched personally by the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today: Thyroid Cancer.

We shared a very real heartache, we all cared for and loved  someone who lost, or nearly lost, everything they worked for as a result of cancer care costs and related expenses.  We witnessed first hand how many of the cancer survivors we knew with depleted savings, unable to work or find work had to decide between food and shelter or medications and follow-up medical care after the most a financially devastating and emotionally traumatic experience of their lives, surviving cancer.

We could not sit by and without extending a helping hand and a  very different from cancer awareness and support organization was born. Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Funds' mission, vision and goal is focused on one priority patient care and assistance, not research funding.

The American Cancer Institute projects there will be 48,000 new cases of thyroid cancer diagnosed in 2011, of those 1,750 will result in death. It is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer worldwide regardless of age, sex, race or ethnic background. Women are three times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Sadly,  childhood cancer survivors are also at an increased risk of developing the condition later in life.

While the prognosis for most thyroid cancer patients is very good, the rate of recurrence can be up to 30%, and recurrences can occur even decades after the initial diagnosis. Therefore, it is important that thyroid cancer survivors get regular follow up examinations to detect early any sign of recurrence, thus monitoring thyroid hormone levels by an endocrine specialist and other diagnostic testing such as neck ultrasound and/or  periodic radioactive iodine scans becomes necessary throughout the patient's lifetime.

Thanks to generous people like you, we are making progress every day in the fight against thyroid cancer. We realize these are financially challenging times, and that's why your tax deductible gift means more than ever to the 1.4 million people who will be diagnosed with cancer this year and become one more person at risk of developing thyroid cancer in the future, not to millions of people who are cancer survivors at this very moment.

When you support Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund, your donation allows us to  help pay for:

Medical Insurance Doesn't Cover All Expenses

Many families face the difficult challenge of paying for the medical claim portion or bill  that  the medical insurance does not cover.  Some medical insurance policies only cover 50% of the cost of medications and treatments.  Others cover as much as 70% or 80% of the cost.  That still leaves a substantial portion of medical care costs for thyroid cancer treatements and llfe long follow up  that many thyroid cancer patients and survivors  just cannot afford.  Most of us will agree that 30% of a $100,000 medical bill is pretty hard for the average low or middle income family  to handle.  In fact, hundreds of families in the United States face medical bankruptcy everyday!  This is unconscionable -and we must do something to help!

In addition, not all medical insurance policies cover the same costs or even recognize as “usual, customary and reasonable” the same treatment for thyroid cancer and follow up care.  Not all medical insurance is the same.  For instance, if a patient is diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer today, depending on their insurance carrier, some patients are told that after having the thyroid removed they should have radioactive iodine treatment to “kill” or destroy any remaining cancer cells. Other medical insurance carriers consider this “standard” practice tell  “optional” –and therefore do not “cover” it.

Most doctors agree  that “radioactive iodine ablation” treatment increases the odds that thyroid  cancer will not recur for  thyroid Cancer patients diagnosed with stage II papillary thyroid cancer and beyond as well as follicular “variant” papillary thyroid cancer at any stage and well differentiated follicular thyroid cancer.

Additionally almost 50% of all thyroid cancer patients do not have Thyrogen One Injections in preparation for,  and  prior to their radio-active ablation treatment, either because that option is not discussed with then by “medical” providers that have to “fight” medical  insurance companies to cover this medication as a medically necessary or because the medical insurance carrier does not cover the injections and they simply  cannot  afford the $5,000 plus out of pocket cost for a series of three injections.

Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund is working to develop an access to care grant program for thyroid cancer patients and survivors dedicated to helping bridge the financial  gap between out of pocket costs health care costs (insurance policy deductibles and co-pays and “left-over” balances), thyroid cancer  treatment and survivor follow up so that  thyroid cancer patients and survivors that are denied critical coverage such as this might be able to pay for the option that could mean the difference between life or death.

But we can’t do it alone, we need your help. If you can help financially, it would be greatly appreciated. A donation of any amount is needed. Donations are tax deductible under IRC Section 170 and all donations in excess of $250 will be provided a proof of donation letter. Donating to Stevie JoEllie’s Cancer Care Fund  will make a huge difference in somebody’s life and their family’s life.

Your support is greatly needed.

Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund is a project of United Charitable Programs Inc., a 501(c) 3 Public Charity.   Donations are tax deductible as allowed by law and all funds raised by Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund are received by United Charitable Programs and become the sole property of UCP, which, for internal operating purposes, allocates the funds to the Project (SJCCFThyNet). The Program (SJCCFThyNet) Manager makes recommendations for disbursements which are reviewed by UCP for approval.

Understanding the Costs Related to Cancer Care

After you are diagnosed with cancer, it is important to think about the different types of costs that could add up during your treatment and recovery periods. This will help you determine what kind of budgeting, support, or financial assistance you may need. Your personal costs will depend on several factors, including the length and type of your cancer treatment plan and the extent of your health insurance coverage.
Some costs may be more obvious to you than others. For instance, many people quickly think about how much a particular medication will cost for them based on their insurance coverage. However, there are also other costs – often called “hidden costs” – you will need to consider. These are the costs of daily living that increase due to the illness and its treatment.
For instance, your expenses for gasoline and parking fees will go up a lot if you have advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer and you need to receive daily radiation therapy at a facility 20 miles away from your home. Or, a new expense is added to your budget if you need child care after surgery, after radioactive iodine therapy, to go to the doctor’s office for chemotherapy (yes, depending on the TYPE and Stage of an individual patients thyroid cancer some patients may need chemotherapy).
You may need to work less – and earn less money – because of the demands of the treatment schedule, treatment complications or simply because you don't feel well after thyroidectomy while you adjust to chemical hormone replacement therapy.
To get started, it may be helpful to group the different types of costs based on your budget and needs. Common financial categories for cancer care include:
  • Doctor Appointments: This includes payments for the medical care you receive at each doctor visit, such as a physical examination or check-up. In most situations, your insurance provider requires you to pay a fee called a co-payment, or co-pay, each time you visit the doctor. The amount of the co-pay is set by the insurance company, not the doctor or doctor’s office. In addition, there will typically be a separate payment needed for each laboratory test, such as a blood or urine test, done as part of your appointment.

  • Cancer Treatment Costs: This includes payments for the medical care you receive during your cancer treatment, such as radioactive iodine or each external beam radiation therapy session in the case of advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer. If you’re participating in a clinical trial, there may be other cost-related factors to consider. Some aspects of your treatment may not be covered by insurance. In general, cancer treatment can take anywhere from a few days up to months or years, so you will need to map out, with the help of a doctor or nurse, how often and for how long you may have these out-of-pocket costs.

  • Medication Costs: This includes payments for the specific medicines prescribed during your treatment period, such as Thyrogen injections prior to radioactive iodine,  chemotherapy and drugs to help relieve common side effects in the case of some types of thyroid cancer or advanced/metastatic thyroid cancer.

  • Transportation Costs: This includes expenses you may have due to traveling to and from the doctor’s office and/or treatment facility, whether it is by car, bus, train, or airplane. This category may also cover the price of hotels or other lodging needed.

  • Family and Living Expenses: This includes costs related to running your household and caring for your family during your cancer treatment, such as child care, elder care, and coping support.

  • Caregiving, At-home Care, and Long-Term Care: This includes additional costs of the care that a person with cancer may need, such as fixing meals or driving the patient to each medical appointment. It could also include extended nursing care at a specialized facility in some cases.

  • Employment, Legal, and Financial Issues: This includes the costs that arise when a patient needs professional guidance on employment, legal, or financial issues related to their diagnosis. This includes such topics as addressing loss of wages of the patient or caregiver, learning about employment rights under the law, figuring out medical expenses during income tax filing, or writing a will.
Once you’ve outlined your cost categories, you can begin to think about the specific, individual costs in each one. If you feel overwhelmed, ask for help from a trusted family member, friend, or member of your health care team.

Introduction to Cancer Care Costs: What You Should Know

The cost of cancer care can be high. There may be expenses that you hadn’t planned for during your care. Financial costs can be a burden for people with cancer today, and these costs may affect the medical decisions that you and your doctor make.
If you are a person with cancer, understanding what costs to expect before starting treatment can help you manage the financial impact of cancer in the most effective way possible.  Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund will be covering cancer care costs topics in the next few days and weeks to help you talk with your health care team about coping with the costs of cancer care. Our blog will also share tools and resources to assist you in financial planning before, during, and after treatment.
Whether you have private health insurance, government insurance (such as Medicare or Medicaid), or no insurance, it is important for you to talk openly with your health care team soon after diagnosis about the costs of your care. This may include medical costs -- such as the price of a specific drug -- as well as additional costs -- such as transportation costs to and from the cancer center -- that could make getting the best cancer care more difficult.
Out-of-pocket expenses can quickly add up and affect your family budget. These costs are also the reason some people don’t follow or complete their cancer treatment plan. However, not following your treatment plan for any reason could put your health at risk and lead to even higher health care costs in the future.
For these reasons Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund is working to develop and launch an access to care grant program for thyroid cancer patients and survivors nationwide. Please consider supporting our unique initiative that includes a set aside fund for healthcare access to assist thyroid cancer survivors with medical costs associated with follow up treatment, annual exams,  diagnostics and medications.

Your health care team can also help you identify costs related to your treatment options, suggest ways to help reduce or manage medical and associated costs, and refer you to support services that address the financial difficulties many people with cancer face.

September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month

Everyday all accross America people hear the 3 most life altering words you could ever imagine: " You have cancer."  On that day, these patients lives are changed forever.

It doesn't matter the stage or type of cancer, your race, color, ethnic origin or financial background, those 3 little words are emotionally and, in the vast majority of cases, financially devastating.

Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund is working tirelessly to reach another kind of day: the day when cancer care related costs are no longer an obstacle to treatment, diagnostic follow up, hormonal replacement therapy or a balance long term wellness plan through our access to care grant program.

The SJCCF Access To Care initiative is designed to provide thyroid cancer patients and survivors insurance deductible and co-pay assistance, serve as a clinical services bridge those who lost healthcare coverage as they aged out of their parents policy, for the underinsured or uninsured waiting for government assistance (medicaid/medicare)and others on a case by case basis.

Thyroid Cancer is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today among people of all ages. As with other cancers early detection is key and women are 3 times more likely to develop the condition. But more importantly young people ages 15 to 35 face unique life long healthcare needs as adult thyroid cancer survivors, needs we are working here to help meet through our access to care initiative.

Help when it matters most. Help when it can protect quality of life. Help that can save lives. We hope you never ever need us, but if you do, we want to be here to help you or someone you love. I invite you today to help us build hope for the future.

Any gift you send will make a huge difference - to those currenly being treated for thyroid cancer, for yourself and for those you love who may face the possibility of cancer in the future. Every step we take could very well benefit someone you love one day.

Thank You! Your input and insight has been very helpful in shaping our direction, mission, vision and goals for the 10,000 Strong Against Thyroid Cancer Campaign and you are all Cancer Action Angels in our book!

We would like to magnify our  thyroid cancer awareness campaign through your  experiences and give our growing community a larger voice in our efforts by opening the stage for all of thyroid cancer patients and survivors to share their stories on Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund's Blog, our Facebook "Like" Page  and our Annual Thyroid Cancer Survivors Reunion and Celebration of Life Group Page.

It is an important and integral part of  our efforts to dispel myths and preconceived notions about thyroid cancer and give a "face"  to our thyroid cancer community that is often ignored, misunderstood  and overlooked. Thyroid cancer is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today with women of all ages (girls, adolescents, young adults, middle aged and seniors) diagnosed 3 times more than men and childhood cancer survivors at an increased risk for developing the condition it's time we introduce ourselves to the world and each other.

If you are shy about sharing your personal story in detail  or simply don't feel comfortable composing a full blog post or essay you can still participate and raise thyroid cancer awareness through your comments on our blog or Facebook pages, as long as it is relates to your thyroid cancer experience and survivor journey or the blog post, essay, article or note you are commenting on.

These are YOUR pages and YOUR space to connect with others, help others, vent, inspire, and give back. For many of us, thyroid cancer and survivorship can drain our energy, darken our spirit and leave us shaken. Please don't give up. God does not make mistakes. You are still here and we are here for you!

Fight the Fight!! Speak Up and help Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund reach our goal of 10,000 Strong Against Thyroid Cancer Awareness ! You are a living hero and you can help us save lives.

Here are some questions to get your minds going and help you organize your thoughts for a blog post, essay about your exprience or article:
  •  Where are you in your thyroid cancer survivor journey?
  •  What lessons have you learned from having thyroid cancer?
  •  What gets you through the fear of recurrence and difficult times?
  • Are you putting off any kind of medical follow-up like a doctor visit, scan, blood work?
  • How has your outlook on life changed?
  • Has thyroid cancer had an impact on your relationships with your spouse/partner, children, family, friends, co-workers, self?
  • What would you tell someone who was just diagnosed with thyrid cancer?
  • Did you find an inner-strength and or stronger connection with a higher energy, spirit or source during your thyroid cancer experience?
  • What have you done, if anything to give back and help others fight the fight?
  • Has your thyroid cancer experience and journey inspired you in some way? If so, what did you do with that inspiration?
  • Do you still feel stuck in a “cancer mindframe” even though you’re in remission?
  • Are you living life beyond thyroid cancer?
We look forward to hearing from you. Please feel free to send your completed blog post, essay or article for publishing approval  Email  sjccfthynet@gmail.com  Subject Line: Thyroid Cancer Stories

10,000 Strong Against Thyroid Cancer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 27, 2011
Orlando Florida
Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund differs greatly from other cancer care groups in that our focus is on patient assistance and access to care not research funding. The reason is simple, thyroid cancer is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today regardless of age, sex, race or ethnic background.

At a time of unprecedented unemployment rates, increasing "benefit" cuts by the private and public sector newly diagnosed thyroid cancer patients and survivors facing lifelong healthcare needs and seeking some form of access to medical care assistance has increased by 52% in the past year. While there are over 1,000 organizations nationwide dedicated exclusively to thyroid cancer research funding SJCCF is the sole organization focused exclusively on helping to relieve the financial burden on the patient and family living "with" thyroid cancer.

But we cant do it alone and we need your help and support today more than ever. We are enclosing a link to our 2011 Cause 10,000 Strong Against Thyroid Cancer. Our goal is to raise $100,000 via Causes.com by 12/31/2011 to continue developing and help sustain our access to care grant program for thyroid cancer patients and survivors.

Every one can help by donating a single dollar or sharing this donation link with your friends, family and network http://www.causes.com/sjccfthynet

Thyroid Cancer is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today, regardless of age, sex, race or ethnic background. Women are 3 times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid cancer and sadly, childhood cancer survivors are also at an increased risk of developing the condition. They need our help and we need your support.

Don't delay renew your favorite magazine subscriptions today or browse our e-shop. You can also support Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund by sharing this page and spreading the word to friends and family. We appreciate any help you can provide in helping us reach our fundraising goal.

The Cost of Life - The Stolen Dreams Short Films Competition

As you will learn in this video out-of-pocket expenses for cancer treatment can quickly add up and affect your family budget.

THANK YOU!!!!
