Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Fund is a 100% Volunteer led thyroid cancer awareness, access to care and free supportive services project of United Charitable Programs Inc., a 501(c) 3 Public Charity. It was originally started in 2008  by a group of friends who have all lost someone close to them with this disease we call cancer or who have been touched personally by the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer in America today: Thyroid Cancer. 

We shared a very real heartache, we all cared for and loved  someone who lost, or nearly lost, everything they worked for as a result of cancer care costs and related expenses.  We witnessed first hand how many of the cancer survivors we knew with depleted savings, unable to work or find work had to decide between food and shelter or medications and follow-up medical care after the most a financially devastating and emotionally traumatic experience of their lives, surviving cancer. 

We could not sit by and without extending a helping hand and a  very different from cancer awareness and support organization was born. Stevie JoEllie's Cancer Care Funds' mission, vision and goal is focused on one priority patient care and assistance, not research funding. 

The American Cancer Institute projects there will be 48,000 new cases of thyroid cancer diagnosed in 2011, of those 1,750 will result in death. It is the fastest increasing newly diagnosed cancer worldwide regardless of age, sex, race or ethnic background. Women are three times more likely than men to be diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Sadly,  childhood cancer survivors are also at an increased risk of developing the condition later in life.

While the prognosis for most thyroid cancer patients is very good, the rate of recurrence can be up to 30%, and recurrences can occur even decades after the initial diagnosis. Therefore, it is important that thyroid cancer survivors get regular follow up examinations to detect early any sign of recurrence, thus monitoring thyroid hormone levels by an endocrine specialist and other diagnostic testing such as neck ultrasound and/or  periodic radioactive iodine scans becomes necessary throughout the patient's lifetime.
